Biodiesel is approved as an additive in petroleum diesel fuel, but what blend should I use in my vehicle? Should I use a B5? (5% biodiesel, 95% petroleum diesel) or should I go with a higher ratio of biodiesel? The answer to this question will vary from person to person, and company to company.
Even in low blend ratios, biodiesel will lower emissions, help to clean the engine and extend the life of your engine. The higher the blend ratio, the more of these benefits you will receive. However there are some trade-offs. There is a slight decrease in fuel economy, (reports vary, but most claim a 1-2% decrease) and it is still under debate as to whether or not the NOx emissions play a role in increasing pollution.
Most experts agree that a B20 blend is a good "middle ground", providing balance of emissions reduction, fuel economy, elevated cold flow pour point, and the blessings of the engine manufacturers. Remember, biodiesel is also a natural detergent, so there will be some residue from the petroleum diesel that you need to clean out of your filters when you start using it. So, what blend should you use? Consider your goals first, then GO FOR IT! The best way to lower your emissions is to get some biodiesel in the tank!
